Peng Ma's Artistic Resume:

1933 - Born in Penglai, Shandong Province, China.

1948-1950 - Studied oil painting with Fang Gang Min (方幹民); studied woodcut printing with Li Lun (劉侖).

1953-1955 Studied Chinese brush painting under the tutelage of Fu Bao Shi (傅抱石) at Nanjing Teacher’ College (南京師範學院).

1957-1961 Studied printmaking (all media) with Zhang Yang Xi (張漾兮), and Chinese brush painting with Pan Tian Shou (潘天壽) at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (浙江美院).

1961-1989 Taught sketching, Chinese brush painting and printmaking at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. At the same time he created many artworks for provincial and national exhibitions as well as international touring exhibitions.

1989 - Immigrated to Canada as a professional artist.

1994 - He has been the organizer for the annual Asian Heritage Month Art exhibitions in Toronto since 1994.

1997 - Solo exhibition "Peng Ma's Abstract Ink Paintings", Now Art Gallery, Toronto.

1997 - Solo exhibition: Peng Ma's Work, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (國父紀念館), Taipei.

1997 - A Collection of Peng Mas Chinese Brush Painting, published in Taiwan.

1998 - Recipient of the Ontario Arts Council Visual Arts Individual Grant to Senior Artists.

1998 - Invited by Magna International Inc. to create a full-body bronze statue of e founder Frank Stronach.

1998 - Chinese painting "High Park" was awarded First Price at "Landscape: The Last Inspiration Juried Show."

1998 - Solo exhibition: "99 Peng Ma's Sculpture and Painting", Praxis Gallery, Toronto, Canada.

1999-2000 Confucius (bronze); 3 castings permanently installed in Qu Fu, China. Toronto and Regina, Canada.

2002 - Winner of Excellence Award for Mother Love (black marble), China International City Sculpture Exhibition and Symposium, Beijing, China.

2002-04 - Invited to create 13 outdoor sculptures for China-Canada Friendship Sculpture Garden, Beijing, China.

2004 - China-Canada Friendship Sculpture Garden published by Beijing Foreign Language Press, Chine.

2005 - The Great Waterfalls: oil painting (group exhibition), Toronto Asian Heritage Month.

2008 - Solo exhibition "Peng Ma's Abstract Ink Painting and Sculpture," Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery, Toronto.

2008 - Funded by the Canada Council for the arts and Ontario Arts Council, Peng Ma: Chinese Brush Painting published by the TSAR Publications, Toronto, Canada.

2009 - "Universal Imagination," a series of major works by distinguished Ontario artists celebrating Stong College's 40th Year and York University's 50th Year Anniversaries, Samuel J. Zacks Art Gallery, York University, Toronto, Canada.

2011- Funded by the Canada Council for the arts and Ontario Arts Council, Peng Ma: Abstract Ink Painting published by the TSAR Publications, Toronto, Canada.

2011 - Contemporary Tradition: Exhibition of Abstract Painting's by Peng Ma, Shi Fu and Zhu Lan, Kao Ying Gallery (多倫多藝廊) in Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

2011 - "Joint Exhibition of Seven Contemporary Artists", Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery, Toronto.

2012 - Paintings of Peng Ma published by the Contemporary Arts Publication, Toronto, Canada.

2012 - Solo Exhibition of Abstract Paintings, Kao Ying Gallery in Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

2012 - 13 pieces brush paintings were collected by The Royal Ontario Museum and a few of them were exhibited there to celebrate the ROM's 100th Anniversary.

2014 - New York Art Expo, New York, USA.

2015 - Art Capital Exhibition, Paris, France.

2017 - Art Capital Exhibition, Paris, France.

2013-2021 - Several brush painting were sold through auctions at Varley Art Gallery (Markham, Ontario, Canada), Poly Auction, Guardian Auction, and Christie's Auction.

Peng Ma is dissatisfied with the fixed patterns and clichés shared by generations of Guohua (國畫) artists, although he has built his basic concepts and skills on such a tradition. His recent paintings deliver powerful visual effects and speak strong contemporary sentiments. They are a vivid reflection of his observation and interpretation of Mother Nature.

This painting was dedicated to Ma Peng by Wang Bo-min, a renowned scholar in aesthetic in China. In the inscription, Wang calls Ma "a man of virtue" and shares with Ma his core view about painting - "achieving un-similar similarity with un-intentional intention".
